#74: 80’s Overdrive + #75 and #76

#74: 80’s Overdrive (PC)

It’s a racing game in the style of the oldschool, outrun, looking games ^^ Win races, earn money and upgrade your car, simple stuff, really easy…until you get to the final race! A one on one against a car that is faster than your car so you can’t just drive clean and win…you have to boost past and block the cheater from passing you ^^ Oh and you only have 2 boosts so you use one to pass him and then you have one left in case you fuck up and let him overtake. The game got a real boost in difficulty right at the end ๐ŸŠ

#75: Wonderboy: Dragon’s Trap (PC)

This is nostalgic for me me and my brother had this for the Master System back in the day ^^

Here we have a remake with real nice artwork that stays faithful to the original sprites and music that, while beautiful, can get a bit too…much. I just like the simplicity of the old music ^^

The great thing is that you can, with the press of a button, change between original sprites and the new, hand painted sweetness AND the same goes for the music so you can have the new art with the old soundtrack or vice versa ๐Ÿ‘

If I remember correctly the gameplay is the same as the original, with the added challenge of the area called “The unknown”. I have not played through that stuff but it feels like a challenge-thingie and I don’t have time for that, I need to play more games ๐Ÿฆ†

#76: Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA)

I’ve played this before (duh) and it’s one of the best games for the GBA and one of the best remakes of all time! The only part I do not like is the mother brain fight. You feel like a pinball getting pushed around by small canons, doughnut canons and mother brains hadouken…oh and the floor is lava…and I was swimming in it for most of the fight ๐ŸŸ Still a great game ๐Ÿ‘Œ

——————————————————————————————————————————-

Now I need to figure out what to play this weekend…Ufouria for the NES? Metroid Fusion? Sonic 3? Do I play it safe and run through Turtles fall of the foot clan for Gameboy and maybe Bust-a-move 2? I know I’ll lose a weekend to Halloween because I’ll probably drink a couple of stiff drinks with people from work so I’ll probably have to play this safe for a bit…

#64: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (pc)

First I thought that would just be some kind of spiritual successor to Wonderboy but, no, this is a main-line Wonderboy game and it is amazing ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Huge props to the people who worked on the graphics, it must have taken ages drawing all this. This could be the best looking game I’ve beaten this year and since I’ve played so many games already I’d say that’s high praise ^^ Characters and environments, it all just looks amazing.

The music? Oh it matches the graphics ^^ If you ever played a Wonderboy game before you will recognize a whole bunch of songs and they sound better than ever here.ย  ย  ย  ย  Side-crawlers dance has always been one of my favorites ^^

The game plays like a Metroid game with a huge map to explore complete with dead ends that require you to find one of the five different animal-orb-thingies to progress. The pig can smell secret things, the frog can swing with his tongue, the lion can run and break blocks, the snake can slither through small holes and spit venom and the dragon can fly and spit fireballs ^^

Highlight of the game? The bosses. They all have some fun mechanic you use to beat them and while they are pretty easy to figure out you still feel like a gaming god while kicking all kinds of ass ^^ The lion you have to flip the stage on stands out for me, real fun fight ^^

This was a long game, Steam is telling me 17 hours, and I have stuff left that I did not find. I don’t have the gold shield and the gold boots, I am missing one piece each, and I don’t have all the item upgrades for the pig/human. I did check the internet a couple of times, like when you fight the warlock in the haunted mansion…how the hell was I supposed to figure out that I had to pause the game and turn on a translator thing to understand the boss? That was weird.

Still, this is a contender for my game of the year :O

I have played a lot of games this month :s

#52: Wonder Boy in Monster Land

This seems pretty advanced for 1989! It’s a colorful platform adventure/action-rpg with lots of upgrades to find on your journey to defeat…uhm, a space-brain? A perfect date for Motherbrain ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s a great game for the Genesis (megadrive) and, I just checked, it’s on Steam too and for only 99cents ^^ If you like retro platform adventures I recommend you pick it up.

Nothing really got under my skin, some disappearing blocks annoyed me and you have to do the re-fights again if you die on the last boss…and since I did not have all the heartsย  I got my ass kicked a couple of times. It’s not like the bosses are hard anymore with the endgame equipment you have so it just wastes your time.

Wonderboy? Yeah, it has some similarities x)

The game is good but it has some annoying stuff going on. You can’t turn down the volume…I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a modern game, I guess they went full retro o_O Also, no way of using the D-Pad? The woodpecker challenge with analog stick can suck it.

If you can deal with the controls the game is great but if you are like me and can’t handle 2D platformers with analog sticks the game turns from great to good ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

And I did die a couple of times but I always made sure to have a fresh save so that I would not have to replay too much. The time is also wrong…I probably took 11 hours o_o

I really think I need 0-100 scoring system because I want to give this a 7…but not really…bah.

I’ve slowed down a bunch…I really want 50 games done before May rolls around…maybe I should play something a bit cheap, something I’ve played before ^^

TO THE GYM!
